Career & Vocational Services

Students have an opportunity to learn a variety of vocational skills as a part of their Individual Transition Plan (ITP).

All high school students participate in 90 minutes a week of directed group instruction in career and vocational skills.

Instruction targets four crucial focus areas:

• Independent Living Skills & Self-Advocacy,
• Employment & Training,
• Post-Secondary Education
• Technology Readiness.

Students develop appropriate socialization techniques, team building, cooperative learning, and improving interpersonal relationships.

Post-Secondary Education – Students will identify post-educational settings in which to pursue their post-secondary options. Students will participate in school outings and visit the local community college and university campuses. Students develop skills in researching educational grants and financial aid (FASA) opportunities

Job Training & Development – Students will develop career awareness by participating in Vocational assessments & Learning Styles Inventories. Students keep digital resumes and job applications. Community field trips are scheduled to gather information about local job opportunities. Students will have the chance to participate in local job fairs and meet with community advocates.

Beach Cities works with districts to explore the option of a Workability Program for students.

Independent Living Skills – In our Independent Living Skills classes students develop and maintain budgets. Students are taught strategies to begin tasks independently. The class focus on providing information/training in financial management and budgeting; personal responsibility skills; self-advocacy; household management; consumer and resource use; obtaining vital records; how to access/use public transportation, pay bills, obtain, read and correct a credit report.

Technology- Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes.  Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively. Students Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, using a variety of digital environments and media.  Students learn to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.
